Most of us have experienced things in life we are naturally drawn towards. For myself there has always been an urge to play with color & patterns, to design and create. While growing up in the east coast of Canada I spent much of my youth painting, drawing and sewing. I was encouraged to pursue a degree in Fine & Studio Arts and attended NSCAD University in the historic port city of Halifax, Nova Scotia. I graduated in 1996 with majors in textiles and ceramics. After travelling and working abroad I moved to the Canadian Rockies in 2000 and have been constantly inspired by their energy and natural beauty ever since.
Although I have explored many different mediums I have been consistently drawn to textiles. The combination of texture, color and pattern are endless and this makes it such a versatile medium to work with. Combining these elements can be so beautiful and this is what inspires me to make my art.
While working for an upholsterer in the spectacular mountain town of Canmore, Alberta, I began making one of a kind cushions under the name "Murphy's Mellows". A local interior designer picked up my work and it was through her that I discovered the large amount of samples fabrics discarded by the design industry. Since that time I have made it my mission to rescue as many of these high quality textiles and turn them into something beautiful and desirable.
Funky Thistle and the messenger bags we are known for evolved in 2005. I continue to make the cushions but have turned most of my attention to finely crafting one of a kind bags, totes and purses for people looking for something unique. Due to the source of the materials used each bag is a one of a kind and that is perfect because so are the people who wear them!
The Funky Thistle studio is settled west of the Canadian Rockies in Kimberley, British Columbia. It is a picturesque little town filled with artist, athletes, back bears and meandering trails. Perfect to keep inspired and feed the soul.
Each FT piece is individually crafted with much consideration and attention detail. I strive for unique design and fine craftsmanship and above all I want to make beautiful things for the world.
